Former M&S Leader Joins Government to Address Youth Unemployment

The UK government is intensifying efforts to combat youth unemployment. To lead these initiatives, former M&S leader Bolland has joined the government. He emphasized the importance of collaborating with businesses to enhance opportunities for young people.
Understanding Youth Unemployment
The issue of youth unemployment is alarming, with the latest report by Milburn highlighting a persistent crisis. The review focused on the population of 16- to 24-year-olds who are not engaged in employment, education, or training, often referred to as NEET.
Key Findings
- Six in ten NEET individuals had never held a job.
- Despite challenges, 84% of surveyed NEET young people expressed a desire for employment or training.
- Official figures indicated over one million young people are currently not in education, employment, or training, marking the highest rate in over 12 years.
Government Initiatives
In response to Milburn’s findings, the government has launched a partnership with major UK businesses. This initiative aims to provide 300,000 work experience and training placements over the next three years.
Bolland’s Experience and Contributions
Bolland, who previously served as the chief executive of Morrisons and chief operating officer at Heineken, has a strong background in business leadership. In 2012, he founded Movement to Work, a charity committed to helping disadvantaged young individuals secure employment. The charity has successfully aided over 200,000 young people to enter the workforce.
With these new efforts, the government hopes to significantly reduce youth unemployment and create a brighter future for the younger generation. Collaboration between public and private sectors is considered crucial for achieving these goals.
