The small community of Lily Plain, located southwest of Prince Albert, faced a mandatory evacuation order on Thursday evening. However, this was downgraded to an evacuation alert at around 9 p.m. that same night. Residents in the area remain on high alert as the fire spreads.
Cory Wasyliw, a resident of Macdowall, expressed his disappointment at the destruction of the nearby forest. Wasyliw, who has experience fighting wildfires dating back to 1989, questioned why the Lobstick fire was not contained sooner. “Why did they stop suppressing it and putting it out?” he asked, referring to reports of equipment being withdrawn temporarily.
Challenges in Fire Suppression
Public Safety Minister Michael Weger addressed the ongoing efforts to manage the Lobstick fire during a press briefing on Friday. He explained that some firefighting equipment had been pulled back due to safety concerns. The extreme heat, with temperatures reaching nearly 30 degrees Celsius, hindered dozer operations in certain areas. “The dozers just couldn’t get into some of the spots,” Weger stated.
Volunteer Firefighters on the Frontlines
Volunteer firefighter Jordyne Seminoff described the challenging conditions firefighters face. “With that heat and the humidity being so low, we’re kind of in that best recipe for a fire to move,” she said. Alongside her fellow crew members, Seminoff has been actively involved in firefighting efforts since the blaze began.
