Vijay Urges PM to Support State Anthem, Mekedatu in Brief Meeting

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay recently met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi. This visit marks his first official engagement in the capital since taking office earlier this month. The meeting lasted for about 20 minutes and focused on several important issues concerning Tamil Nadu.
Key Discussions with Prime Minister Modi
During their brief encounter, Vijay raised several significant matters:
- He expressed gratitude to PM Modi for the return of ancient copper plates from Holland.
- Vijay requested that the state anthem be permitted to be played at the start of government programs.
- He addressed concerns regarding Karnataka’s Mekedatu dam project, emphasizing its potential impact on Tamil Nadu’s water resources.
Concerns over Mekedatu Dam Project
The Mekedatu project has sparked tensions between Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. Vijay cautioned that any unilateral efforts by Karnataka to construct a dam would violate the spirit of the Cauvery Water Tribunal and a Supreme Court verdict. He urged PM Modi to direct the Jal Shakti Ministry to block the dam’s construction.
Karnataka’s Deputy Chief Minister, D.K. Shivakumar, announced plans to submit a revised detailed project report (DPR) for the Mekedatu project. He asserted that Tamil Nadu has “no right” to contest the initiative, fueling a heated debate over the contentious water-sharing issue.
Request for State Anthem Recognition
Vijay’s appeal for recognition of the state anthem is rooted in a directive from the Union Home Ministry, which mandates that all six stanzas of Vande Mataram be sung before the national anthem during government functions. This context highlights the cultural importance of Tamil Thai Vazhthu, the state song, which was performed during Vijay’s oath-taking ceremony.
Support for Defence Initiatives
Another major request made by Vijay involved establishing a Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) Centre for Airborne Systems in Tamil Nadu. This initiative aims to bolster the state’s capabilities in defense and technological advancements.
Political Background and Support
Vijay leads the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), which gained significant power in the recent assembly elections. The party secured 108 seats, and Vijay won a trust vote on May 13, backed by coalition partners including Congress, CPI, CPI(M), VCK, and the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML). Notably, at least 25 MLAs from the AIADMK party broke ranks to support him.
As these discussions develop, the future of Tamil Nadu’s water security and cultural identity remains a priority for its leadership. The outcomes of these requests could shape the relationships between the states involved and influence federal support for Tamil Nadu’s initiatives.
