Saskatoon Opens Spray Pads Early for Extended Hours Amidst Heatwave

In response to soaring temperatures, Saskatoon has moved to open its spray pads two days earlier than planned. The decision aligns with the city’s extreme heat response plan as temperatures soared above 30°C. Residents can now enjoy the city’s 22 spray pads starting Wednesday, instead of the previously scheduled Friday.

Extended Hours for Relief

The spray pads will now operate from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. until Sunday. After this period, the hours will revert to the typical 8 p.m. closure. This extension allows more opportunities for residents to cool off during the heatwave.

Important Operational Notes

  • Spray pads at school grounds will remain inactive during recess and lunch breaks.
  • Specific shut-off times may vary based on school schedules.

Seasonal Upgrades and Delays

Despite the early openings, the Ernest Lindner Park spray pad will remain closed for upgrades. Additionally, the Brighton Core Park and Thorton Park spray pads will experience delays due to ongoing repair work.

Efficient and Sustainable Enhancements

The city is currently improving its spray pads with features aimed at promoting sustainability. The upgrades include new nozzles and remote controls to enhance water efficiency, as well as adding shaded areas, water fountains, and misting stations to increase relief from the heat.

Funding for Upgrades

The project is supported by a significant investment of $700,000 from federal authorities and the Federation of Canadian Municipalities. An additional $950,000 Green Loan will be paid back through savings on water bills.

The upgrades are anticipated to conclude next year, following successful pilot programs in 2023 and 2024. These initiatives reportedly reduced water use by 25-40% while maintaining the enjoyment of the facilities. According to the city, “By switching to lower-flow and misting nozzles, we’re making our spray pads more sustainable while keeping them just as enjoyable!”
