Small Gardens Make the Biggest Impact, Expert Reveals

Small gardens can indeed make a significant impact, as highlighted by gardening expert Leonie Cornelius. As an award-winning garden designer, she recently reflected on the creativity found in small spaces ahead of the upcoming Bord Bia Bloom festival. This annual event will take place from May 28 to June 1.
Postcard Gardens: Breaking Ground
Cornelius was inspired last year when she encountered miniature gardens at Bord Bia Bloom. These gardens, measuring just 2×3 meters each, conveyed powerful stories. They depicted themes such as community and landscape through thoughtful plant selections and designs. Tirlán CountryLife is the primary supporter behind these unique gardens.
Expert Conversations with Diarmuid Gavin
In April, Cornelius participated in a live discussion titled “Where Nature Ends and Design Begins” alongside renowned horticulturist Diarmuid Gavin. This event took place in Athboy, County Meath, before an audience of 200 guests. Their conversation explored the balance between nature and design in gardening. Gavin’s extensive experience, including contributions to the Chelsea Flower Show, showcased his passion for horticulture.
Celebrating Local Horticulturists
During the event, Gavin expressed admiration for local plant experts like Paul Smyth and Colm O’Driscoll. Smyth, originally from Carlow, has engaged in plant expeditions and has co-authored notable gardening books. O’Driscoll, from Kildare, transformed Airfield Estate’s gardens and now presides over the gardens at Lismore Castle.
Creating Community through Gardening
The upcoming Bord Bia Bloom festival will feature 14 postcard gardens created by various community groups, schools, and charity organizations. Themes this year range from promoting biodiversity in rural Ireland to enhancing local habitats. For instance, the Karst Farming Network from south Roscommon will showcase unique aspects of their landscape.
Tirlán CountryLife’s Contribution
Tirlán CountryLife is not only a sponsor but also supports each participating group with plant vouchers to bring their garden visions to life. This initiative emphasizes the importance of community engagement and education in gardening.
Festival Highlights
The Bord Bia Bloom festival is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year. Diarmuid Gavin will share his expertise daily at the Garden Stage, alongside special guests like Peter Dowdall, Leonie Cornelius, and Feebee Foran. Each guest will bring unique insights into gardening, foraging, and plant care.
