Severe Thunderstorms and Tornado Risk Looms Tuesday

Severe thunderstorms and potential tornadoes are expected in various parts of Quebec this Tuesday evening. Meteorologists are urging residents to prepare for intense weather as a warm front collides with a cold front.

Weather Forecast for Tuesday

Temperatures in southern Quebec could feel as high as 32°C. Wind gusts may reach or exceed 90 km/h, contributing to dangerous conditions. The areas at greatest risk of severe thunderstorms include:

  • Quebec City
  • Baie-Comeau
  • Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean
  • Bas-Saint-Laurent

Severe Weather Alerts

In the late afternoon, authorities issued initial alerts for severe thunderstorms across regions like La Tuque and Portneuf. Last night, a severe thunderstorm warning was in effect from Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean to Jacques-Cartier National Park. Additionally, reports stated that a rotating thunderstorm cloud was observed near Saint-Thomas-Didyme, resulting in minor damage to roofs and camping trailers.

Thunderstorm Development and Risks

The weather conditions on Tuesday are expected to create instability in the atmosphere, essential for the development of thunderstorms. The threat will likely persist into the evening as warm air rises due to the advancing cold front.

Storms may emerge in a stretch from Baie-James to Témiscamingue, extending to Baie-Comeau and Beauce. The most vulnerable region includes the Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean area, along with Charlevoix and Bas-Saint-Laurent.

Potential Impact

The combination of warm temperatures and strong winds indicates that heavy rainfall is likely. Areas could receive between 20 mm and 40 mm of rain by Wednesday morning. In regions encountering storms, gusts may exceed 90 km/h, even impacting areas that avoid direct thunderstorms with winds of 50 km/h to 70 km/h.

The risk of severe weather necessitates precautionary measures. Residents should secure outdoor furniture and umbrellas to minimize hazards during the impending storm.

Understanding Wind Shear

A significant factor for the severe thunderstorms this Tuesday is wind shear. This phenomenon, characterized by varying wind speeds and directions with altitude, can enhance rotation within thunderstorm systems. As warm air is lifted by the approaching cold front, conditions may lead to the formation of tornadoes and supercell thunderstorms.

As the evening progresses, while the intensity of thunderstorms may decrease, the threat will remain significant. Residents are advised to stay alert and follow updates from local meteorological services.
