Marmot Causes Crash at Canadian Formula 1 Grand Prix

During the Canadian Formula 1 Grand Prix, a surprising incident occurred when a marmot caused a crash involving driver Alex Albon. The unexpected event took place on Friday, during the only practice session before the qualifying rounds.

Marmot-Related Crash at Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve

Albon, driving for Williams, lost control of his car as the marmot attempted to cross the track at Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve. This mishap resulted in significant damage to the left side of his vehicle, which collided with the track barriers. Fortunately, the 30-year-old driver emerged unharmed.

Impact on Qualifying and Race

The incident led to the second red flag of the practice session, following earlier issues faced by Liam Lawson. Lawson’s Racing Bulls encountered problems on the Notre-Dame Island circuit, leading him to miss the qualifying round as well.

  • Albon’s initial practice time placed him ninth.
  • After the crash, he dropped to 14th, 3.240 seconds behind leader Kimi Antonelli of Mercedes.
  • In the driver’s standings, Albon is currently 16th, sharing the position with Esteban Ocon of Haas, both with only one point from four races.

Albon’s single point came from a tenth-place finish in Miami earlier this month. He had a challenging experience during last year’s race in Montreal, as he did not complete the course.

Wildlife Safety Measures

In a proactive measure, the Société du parc Jean-Drapeau recently relocated approximately thirty wild animals, including marmots, to enhance safety around the circuit. However, despite these efforts, at least one marmot and some birds were spotted near the track.

Historical Context

Last summer, a similar incident nearly impacted Lewis Hamilton’s race when he suspected hitting a marmot during the 12th lap. The veteran driver, however, continued and finished in sixth place.

This recent encounter serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of racing, where wildlife can pose unexpected challenges on the track.
