Troy Ryan Joins San Jose; Duggan Takes Hamilton GM Role

The Professional Women’s Hockey League (PWHL) announced significant leadership changes, appointing Meghan Duggan as general manager for the Hamilton franchise and Troy Ryan as both general manager and head coach for the San Jose team. These appointments finalize the league’s expansion team management for next season, adding four new franchises and expanding the PWHL to 12 teams.

Leadership Changes Within the PWHL

On a Friday announcement, Duggan, a three-time U.S. Olympian, transitions from a player development role with the New Jersey Devils. Over the past five years, she has gained considerable experience in hockey operations and has served as a special consultant for the PWHL, contributing to its establishment.

At 38, Duggan brings her extensive background to Hamilton, where she aims to foster a competitive team culture. “Creating a team and environment from the ground up is a privilege,” Duggan stated, expressing her commitment to developing a championship-caliber team in a city with a rich hockey tradition.

Troy Ryan Takes on Dual Role in San Jose

Troy Ryan, aged 54, departs the Toronto Sceptres, where he was head coach during their inaugural three seasons. Ryan becomes the PWHL’s first dual-role general manager and coach in San Jose. Commenting on his new role, he emphasized the opportunity to shape the league’s standards and community connections.

Ryan has an impressive coaching resume, having led the Canadian national women’s team to a gold medal at the 2022 Beijing Olympics. His history with the team includes three gold medals and two silver medals in world championships after revitalizing the program following a bronze in 2019.

Immediate Responsibilities and Timeline

Both Duggan and Ryan now face the task of assembling their teams. Key immediate responsibilities include hiring coaching staff and filling team rosters. The expansion signing process kicks off in two weeks, with the league draft scheduled for June 17.

Expansion of the PWHL

The addition of franchises in Hamilton, San Jose, Detroit, and Las Vegas marks a significant growth for the PWHL since its inception in 2024. This expansion reflects a growing interest in women’s professional hockey, with a total of 12 teams ready to compete next season.

As the PWHL prepares for a new chapter, the leadership of Duggan and Ryan represents an exciting direction for the league and its players. Their combined experiences and dedication to women’s hockey promise to enhance the league’s presence and success in the coming years.
