Adam Macko’s Historic MLB Journey with the Blue Jays

Adam Macko’s journey to becoming a Major League Baseball (MLB) player is remarkable and inspiring. Born in Bratislava, Slovakia, Macko spent part of his youth in Ireland before moving to Alberta, Canada. He faced numerous challenges along the way, but his determination and innovative learning methods set him apart.
From Slovakia to the Major Leagues
Adam Macko is the first Slovakian-born player in MLB history. His story began when he discovered a love for baseball at a young age. Despite the scarcity of baseball in Slovakia, Macko played the sport as a child, learning from his local coaches. His parents, Vladimir and Milena, had dreamed of moving to Canada, but it took time for that dream to materialize.
Early Influences
Macko’s early interest in baseball was fostered through free extracurricular programs offered at his school. He started playing baseball despite his father’s skepticism, as soccer and hockey dominate the sports culture in Slovakia. Nevertheless, Adam excelled, demonstrating a clear passion for the game.
When Macko was 11 years old, his family began the process of obtaining a Canadian visa. While waiting, they moved to Ireland, where Adam sought to enhance his baseball skills. He discovered his local club, the Greystone Mariners, and learned valuable pitching techniques by watching YouTube videos, particularly from stars like Justin Verlander.
Transition to Canada
After a year and a half in Ireland, the Macko family relocated to Alberta. This move allowed Adam to attend Vauxhall Academy, which specializes in baseball training. There, he not only improved his skills but also honed his English by watching baseball movies with Slovakian subtitles.
In 2019, Macko was drafted in the 7th round by the Seattle Mariners during MLB Draft. His journey in the minors saw significant development, leading to a trade to the Toronto Blue Jays in 2022. The Blue Jays recognized his potential and added him to their 40-man roster.
Historic Major League Debut
On a dramatic night at Yankee Stadium, Adam Macko made his MLB debut, marking a milestone for Slovakian baseball. In his first appearance, he retired the side in the sixth inning, contributing to a 5-3 victory for the Blue Jays. This performance earned him his first MLB hold.
