DU Students Protest Overnight Against Water Shortage and Evictions

Students at the University Hostel for Women (UHW) in Delhi University (DU) engaged in an overnight protest addressing severe water shortages and alleged extortion by the administration. The demonstration, led by the All India Students’ Association (AISA), began at approximately 9:30 p.m. on May 21 and lasted until the early morning of May 22, 2026.

Key Issues Raised During the Protest

The protest highlighted several pressing concerns faced by the students:

  • Lack of water supply in two blocks.
  • Intimidation and extortion claims by the administration.
  • Forced eviction of students from the hostel premises.
  • Inadequate facilities, including missing chairs in the reading room.

Impact on Students’ Studies

The students emphasized that their grievances came at a critical time. They were in the midst of semester examinations and preparation for the National Eligibility Test (NET). According to AISA, the administration’s shutdown of the water supply has excessively burdened the students during this stressful period.

Administration’s Response

After the protest, the administration provided a written mandate. This included:

  • An unconditional extension of residency until June 30.
  • A commitment to resolve infrastructural issues, including updates on reading room chairs and mess coolers.

This response came after AISA reported unmet promises from the hostel provost regarding the restoration of necessary amenities. Students remain hopeful that these commitments will be fulfilled promptly.

The situation highlights the ongoing struggles faced by students living in university accommodations. Water shortages and administrative challenges continue to be pressing issues that need resolution.
