Sudden Weather Opportunity Transforms Scilly Isles Cruise Into Unforgettable Adventure

Luke and Sara Griffith had the perfect opportunity to explore the scenic landscapes and culinary delights of Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly, thanks to a settled weather window. Set to embark on a ten-day summer break in mid-July, they set off from Falmouth after experiencing unsettled weather earlier in the season.
The Journey Begins: Setting Sail from Falmouth
On July 22, after stocking up their Duchy 35 yacht, Laila, they confidently set sail. With the wind calming, they traveled to Malpas, where they found a peaceful pontoon for docking. The tranquility of the surroundings added to their enjoyment as they indulged in a homemade quiche and rosé wine during their first day on the cruise.
Exploring Local Gem: St Clement and Truro
The following day, they ventured ashore for a leisurely walk along the Tresillian estuary. Discovering the hamlet of St Clement, they enjoyed the stunning architecture of the Grade 1 listed church and picturesque cottages. A visit to Mary’s Pasty Shop earned them some authentic Cornish pasties.

After exploring the local market in Truro, they returned to Malpas, concluding their day with cider at the Heron Inn pub.
Adventures at Trelissick and Helford
On July 24, they ventured downstream to Trelissick House, enjoying the National Trust gardens and the sunny weather. With provisions gathered from Truro, they dined on local goodies aboard Laila before heading to Helford.
They successfully moored for three nights and spent their evenings exploring the charming village, with a visit to the local pub where they learned about the owner’s connection to Queen’s drummer, Roger Taylor.
Setting Course for the Scilly Isles
By July 25, they seized the opportunity presented by favorable winds and decided to visit the Isles of Scilly, a destination they had long desired to explore. With a 60 nautical mile journey ahead, they prepared their yacht for departure.
Arrival in St Agnes
They arrived at St Agnes on July 26 in perfect conditions and secured an anchorage after a brief moment of maneuvering. Eager to explore, they set out to hike and appreciate the island’s natural beauty.
