Spurs vs. Thunder Game 2: Two Starters Ruled Out Due to Injury

In a critical Game 2 matchup of the Western Conference Finals, the San Antonio Spurs faced the Oklahoma City Thunder without two key starters who were sidelined due to injuries. Both players suffered hamstring issues, significantly impacting their teams’ dynamics on the court.
Injuries Impact Game 2
The Thunder’s Jalen Williams, who recently returned from a Grade 1 left hamstring strain, exited the game with 1:34 left in the first quarter due to left hamstring tightness. He was officially ruled out for the remainder of Game 2, which took place on May 18, 2026. Cason Wallace stepped in for him and took over the responsibilities on the court.
During the regular season, Williams had an impressive average of 17.1 points, 4.6 rebounds, and 5.5 assists while shooting at 48 percent from the field. Notably, he had scored over 20 points in two of his three playoff games. His potential return from injury remains uncertain.
Spurs’ Rookie Dylan Harper Injured
The Spurs also felt the loss of rookie Dylan Harper, who sustained a right leg injury during the fourth quarter. He made several hard falls before leaving the game with his jersey pulled over his face. Harper played for 25 minutes, contributing 12 points, two rebounds, and three assists, while shooting 50 percent from the field.
Although the Spurs cited only “right leg” in their injury statement, it appeared that Harper was favoring his right hamstring. Harper had earned a place on the NBA’s All-Rookie First Team and averaged 11.8 points, 3.4 rebounds, and 3.9 assists during the regular season. He was recognized with five third-place votes for the Rookie of the Year Award.
Coaching Comments on Injuries
Spurs coach Mitch Johnson addressed the injury situation, emphasizing that De’Aaron Fox, another crucial player who has been absent due to re-aggravated right ankle soreness, likely would not return during the playoffs. Fox had been ruled questionable ahead of both games in the series but chose to remain off the court.
Johnson remarked, “This will be just kind of the world we live in,” acknowledging the unpredictable nature of injuries in playoff basketball.
Game Outcome and Next Steps
Despite the setbacks, the Oklahoma City Thunder emerged victorious in Game 2, defeating the San Antonio Spurs 122-113. This win leveled the Western Conference Finals at 1-1, heading into the next match.
Game 3 will take place at the Frost Bank Center, scheduled for Friday evening at 7:30 p.m. Central on NBC. The series continues to be tightly contested, with both teams fighting for a spot in the NBA Finals.
