35-Meter Asteroid to Closely Pass Earth Monday Night, Visible to Viewers

An asteroid, designated as 2026 JH2, will make a close approach to Earth on Monday, May 18, 2026, at approximately 11:30 PM. This celestial body, measuring between 16 and 35 meters in diameter, was discovered on May 10, 2026, by scientists at the Mount Lemmon Observatory in Arizona.

Details of the Close Encounter

The asteroid will pass within 91,000 kilometers of our planet. Mark Norris, a professor at the University of Lancashire, explains that this distance is the closest we can observe an object without the risk of collision. To put it into perspective, this distance is a quarter of the way to the Moon.

No Need for Alarm

  • There is no danger of the asteroid colliding with Earth.
  • Telecommunication and weather satellites are also safe; 2026 JH2 will not interfere with their orbits.

How to Observe Asteroid 2026 JH2

At around 11:23 PM on May 18, the asteroid will reach its closest approach. However, it will not be visible to the naked eye. Astronomers suggest using an amateur telescope or high-quality binoculars for the best view.

For those without access to such equipment, the Virtual Telescope Project will live-stream the asteroid’s passage on YouTube. Viewers should focus on the constellations Ursa Major and Leo during the event.
