Rochester Musician Murder: Man Convicted
A jury has convicted a man in connection with the 2022 murder of a musician from Rochester. Rahjule Keeton, 21, faces charges of second-degree murder and both first and second-degree robbery. The verdict was delivered on Tuesday by the Monroe County District Attorney’s Office.
Details of the Incident
The victim, James Hallenbeck, 29, was tragically found dead on Olean Street at Coretta Scott Crossing on August 21, 2022. His body exhibited signs of a gunshot wound to the neck, alongside blunt force trauma to his head and body. Hallenbeck was known for playing keyboard in various heavy metal bands throughout Rochester.
Arrest and Investigation
Keeton was apprehended in November 2022 during a traffic stop, following a sealed indictment warrant. At the time of Hallenbeck’s death, law enforcement reported an absence of motive. Notably, Hallenbeck had no identification or money on him when discovered.
Subsequent inquiries revealed that Hallenbeck had been robbed, with his bank cards taken during the altercation. Police reported that Keeton encountered Hallenbeck while he was enjoying a late-night walk. Together with an unidentified accomplice, Keeton robbed and shot Hallenbeck before fleeing in a vehicle.
Details of the Crime
- The vehicle used in the escape was reported stolen from St. Claire Street in July 2022.
- The firearm linked to Hallenbeck’s murder was recovered in a separate investigation and was connected to other violent incidents in Rochester.
- After Hallenbeck’s death, his credit card was used multiple times at a location in Genesee County, but the individuals who used it were not tied to his murder.
Community Impact
Assistant District Attorney Michael Caranante highlighted Hallenbeck’s love for late-night walks, expressing sorrow over the loss of life. He also acknowledged the hard work of the Rochester Police Department in bringing Hallenbeck’s killer to justice. “While no verdict can undo this devastating loss, we hope today brings a measure of accountability,” Caranante stated.
Keeton’s sentencing is set for June 8, 2026, marking a significant moment for the Rochester community as they continue to mourn Hallenbeck’s untimely passing.
