Thailand Reduces Tourist Visa-Free Stay Duration

Thailand is making significant changes to its tourist visa policies. The country will now limit visa-free stays for visitors from over 90 countries. This adjustment comes after a temporary 60-day exemption was introduced in July 2024 to help recover from the pandemic.

New Tiered Visa System

Under the new framework, the Thai government will implement a tiered visa system. Visa-free stays are now capped at 30 days. For travelers from certain countries, the allowance is reduced to just 15 days.

Reasons for the Change

Government spokesperson Rachada Dhanadirek noted that the previous 60-day exemption led to exploitation of the system. Security has become a primary concern for the country amidst growing tourism.

  • The extended visa period was associated with increased illegal activities.
  • Issues included grey-market operations and unauthorized foreign workers.

High-Profile Arrests and Economic Impact

The policy shift follows numerous arrests related to drug trafficking and human smuggling by foreign nationals. Thai officials aim to address these issues without targeting specific nationalities. Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow emphasized that the focus is on individuals misusing the visa system.

To further prevent abuse, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will enforce a restriction of two visa-free entries per calendar year for the standard 30-day tier via land borders.

Tourism Statistics and Future Outlook

The Thai economy heavily relies on tourism, which constitutes over 10 percent of its gross domestic product. Recent government data shows a 3.4 percent decline in foreign arrivals during the first quarter of the year. Notably, Middle Eastern travelers have decreased by nearly 30 percent.

Despite this downturn, Thailand aims to attract 33.5 million foreign tourists in 2026. The exact date for the implementation of the new visa policy has yet to be announced, but officials are closely monitoring the situation.
