Cubs’ Crow-Armstrong Regrets Heated Exchange with Fan
Chicago Cubs center fielder Pete Crow-Armstrong expressed regret regarding a heated exchange with a fan that occurred during a recent game. The incident took place in the fifth inning of the Cubs’ 9-8 loss to the crosstown rival Chicago White Sox at Rate Field.
Crow-Armstrong’s Regrets After Fan Interaction
During the game, Crow-Armstrong attempted to catch a two-run double hit by Miguel Vargas when he was heckled by a woman beyond the fence. In response, the 24-year-old used inappropriate language, which he later regretted. He stated, “I think I just regret my choice of words the most and who that affects in my life, directly and indirectly.”
Crow-Armstrong expressed concern that his language could negatively impact the women in his life and noted, “I’m just bummed out about the word choice, and that a bunch of little kids go and probably find their way to social media and see that as well.”
Manager’s Support and Moving Forward
Cubs manager Craig Counsell commented on the situation, acknowledging Crow-Armstrong’s mistake and emphasizing the need to move on. He stated, “It’s a reality of this job. It happens. Fan interactions happen. You want to try to keep them positive, even when they’re not.”
Performance and Contract Highlights
Pete Crow-Armstrong has emerged as one of the Cubs’ biggest stars. Last season, he recorded a batting average of .247, hitting a career-high 31 home runs and driving in 95 RBIs. He also earned his first Gold Glove for exceptional defensive skills as a center fielder. In March, Crow-Armstrong secured a six-year contract valued at $115 million with the Cubs, following his selection as a first-round pick in the 2020 amateur draft.
Learning from the Incident
According to Cubs outfielder Ian Happ, dealing with fan comments is part of being a professional athlete. He remarked, “Part of playing is that you’re going to hear some stuff that you don’t want to hear.”
Crow-Armstrong acknowledged the importance of maintaining professionalism during such exchanges. He reflected on the situation, saying, “That’s something I should be aware of at all times, that there will be cameras and such on me.” He emphasized the need for respect and positivity in responding to provocations, suggesting a more civil approach going forward.
The incident has sparked discussions on social media, reminding players of their responsibilities both on and off the field.
