Glasgow City Council Backs Plans to Demolish M8 Section

Glasgow City Council has endorsed plans regarding the future of a section of the M8 Motorway viaducts. This key infrastructure, located between Junction 16 (Craighall) and Junction 17 (Charing Cross), faces a critical decision in light of a strategic review by Transport Scotland.

M8 Motorway Review Options

Transport Scotland is evaluating three main options for the M8 viaducts:

  • Repairing the viaducts
  • Replacing the viaducts
  • Demolishing the viaducts

Each option presents different implications for cost, duration, and traffic management.

Option Details

1. Demolition: This would lead to partial closure of the M8. Traffic would be redirected to the M74, which operates close to its maximum capacity. The estimated cost for this option is under £125 million, with an anticipated timeframe of 1-2 years.

2. Repairing: Costs range from £125 million to £200 million, with a potential completion time of up to three years.

3. Replacement: This option is the most costly, estimated between £200 million and £500 million. The completion timeline could extend to four years.

Concerns and Community Engagement

Transport Scotland has acknowledged that removing the viaducts will likely cause significant disruption to both congestion and journey times in the area. A spokesperson emphasized the importance of local community feedback, stating, “We are keen to hear the thoughts of the local communities and road users on the permanent solution for the M8 Woodside Viaducts project.” Public engagement events are set to provide opportunities for residents and road users to learn and express their opinions on the options available.

As Glasgow navigates this critical infrastructure decision, the outcome will shape the future traffic landscape and efficiency of the city’s road network.
