Vision Loss Alters Songwriting Style
Elton shared that he has been grappling with significant vision loss following a severe eye infection he contracted in 2024. This condition has drastically limited his sight in his right eye, leading him to rethink his traditional methods of songwriting.
Previously, John relied heavily on viewing lyrics to craft his music. However, he expressed how this limitation has prompted him to adopt a new methodology. Instead of starting with lyrics, he is now exploring melodies first, a process he had never attempted before.
Embracing Change at 79
During his acceptance speech, John reflected on the transformative impact of his eye issues. He remarked, “What my eye has given me is a chance of, at 80 years of age, completely reversing how I write.” He emphasized the upbeat nature of his upcoming album, describing it as “so different to anything I’ve ever done before, but it’s so happy.”
Despite his numerous accolades and over 30 studio albums, the legendary artist remains passionately committed to his craft. He proclaimed, “If I don’t make music, I’m dead. If I don’t listen to music, I’m dead. Music is my soul, my driving force.”
