The initial rollout of these Amazon Pharmacy kiosks is planned for December in various One Medical offices throughout Los Angeles. The company aims to gradually expand this service to other locations across the country.

The selection of drugs available at each kiosk will depend on local prescribing patterns. However, the kiosks will not provide controlled substances or medications that require refrigeration.
Enhancing Patient Convenience
This initiative is designed to eliminate the need for additional trips to traditional pharmacies, addressing a key issue: many prescriptions remain unfilled due to inconvenient collection processes.
Patients can opt to have their prescriptions sent directly to an Amazon Pharmacy kiosk. Once there, their prescriptions are verified by Amazon pharmacists. Using the Amazon mobile app, patients can check out via a QR code and retrieve their medications in just minutes.
Addressing Prescription Fulfillment Challenges
Hannah McClellan, President of Amazon Pharmacy operations, emphasized the importance of this service. She stated, “Many prescriptions never get filled when patients have to make an extra trip to the pharmacy after seeing their doctor.” This service aims to remove that barrier, enabling patients to start their treatment promptly.

Alongside immediate medication access, users of the kiosks can engage with Amazon’s pharmacy team through phone and video consultations. This feature mirrors the support typically found at traditional pharmacy counters, ensuring that patients can clarify their medication queries seamlessly.

This move by Amazon comes at a time when brick-and-mortar pharmacies face significant challenges. Chains like Rite Aid, CVS, and Walgreens have experienced closures, impacting access to in-person prescription pickups across the United States.
