The weekend has brought an early summer heatwave across much of the country, with temperatures rising above 30°C. This trend is expected to continue into tomorrow.
Weekend Heatwave: Temperatures to Soar Above 30°C
As mid-May unfolds, many regions are experiencing unusually high temperatures reminiscent of summer. The temperature in Gimcheon, Gyeongsangbuk-do reached an impressive 33.1°C, while Yangsan, Gyeongsangnam-do recorded 32.4°C. In Seoul, temperatures neared 30°C by 1 PM, with expectations to exceed this threshold throughout the afternoon.
Causes of the Early Heatwave
This early surge in temperature is attributed to a high-pressure system currently settled over the Korean Peninsula. This system acts as a barrier, preventing cooler air from the north from entering the region. Additionally, the descending motion of air associated with the high pressure increases temperatures. Clear skies allow sunlight to intensify heating during the day.
Forecast and Health Advisory
The unseasonably hot weather is set to persist until early next week. Tomorrow, temperatures in Seoul may reach 31°C, while Daegu could hit a new annual high at 34°C over the following days.
