Royal Marines Refine Skills with Seizures and Helicopter Raids Before US Deployment

Royal Marines from 42 Commando have recently enhanced their operational skills through vehicle seizure drills and helicopter raids. These exercises were conducted on Salisbury Plain, allowing personnel to prepare for imminent deployments. The training involved two Special Operations Maritime Task Units (SOMTU), focusing on maritime counter-terrorism and coastal raid operations.

Enhancing Tactical Skills

The commandos started the training by practicing vehicle interdiction tactics. This involved stopping and seizing hostile vehicles effectively. Following this, they executed tactical insertions using Wildcat helicopters to engage enemy positions.

Strategic Importance of the Training

An officer from Special Operations Maritime Task Unit 1 highlighted the importance of quick deployment capabilities. “Our ability to insert forces tactically from various environments enables us to operate in complex situations,” he stated. This training is part of the UK’s preparation to deploy to the United States for collaborative operations with the US Navy Special Operations Force.

Global Partnerships and Maritime Security

Strengthening international partnerships enhances the UK’s warfighting capabilities. The officer emphasized the importance of these alliances in navigating complex and contested areas. Lima Company, a key participant, consistently provides military assistance to priority partners and supports maritime security operations.

Coordinated Vehicle Seizure Techniques

During the exercises, commandos practiced detaining and searching the occupants of a simulated hostile vehicle. Overwatch was provided by the Wildcat Helicopters from the 847 Naval Air Squadron. This arrangement ensured that the vehicle seizure was executed with minimal risk to personnel.

Helicopter Assault Operations

After the vehicle operations, the commandos transitioned to helicopter assaults. They fast-roped onto various sites, including tall buildings and key transport routes, allowing for rapid establishment of a tactical presence.

  • Each SOMTU can provide:
    • One force protection team
    • Two boarding teams
  • Specialist capabilities include:
    • Scout snipers
    • Uncrewed systems
    • Dive teams
    • Explosive ordnance disposal units

The exercises prepared the Royal Marines for real-world operations, equipping them with essential skills for immediate deployment.
