Filming Locations of Remarkably Bright Creatures Revealed

Remarkably Bright Creatures, a film adaptation of Shelby Van Pelt’s 2022 novel, captures the essence of emotional storytelling. Directed by Olivia Newman, the film tells the story of Tova, a widow played by Sally Field, and her interactions with a soul-searching character named Cameron, portrayed by Lewis Pullman. A significant aspect of the film is Marcellus, an octopus brought to life through the voice of Alfred Molina. The movie is beautifully set in the fictional waterfront town of Sowell Bay, known for its enchanting atmosphere.

Filming Locations of Remarkably Bright Creatures

While Sowell Bay seems like a quaint real town, the film was primarily shot in Vancouver, Canada. The production utilized the scenic Deep Cove neighborhood to replicate this fictional location.

Deep Cove: The Heart of Sowell Bay

Production designer Jennifer Morden explained that Deep Cove provided the perfect backdrop for the scenes set in Sowell Bay. This picturesque area enhanced the film’s nostalgic and serene ambiance.

Vancouver Aquarium

  • Real Aquarium Scenes: Some sequences were filmed at the Vancouver Aquarium, showcasing the giant Pacific octopus, Agnetha, who inspired Marcellus.
  • Hybrid Sets: The production creatively combined the yacht club in Deep Cove with the aquarium facilities for larger tank scenes.

Bringing Marcellus to Life

Visual effects supervisor Chris Ritvo spent time observing real octopuses to inform the creation of Marcellus. He worked closely with Agnetha and a larger octopus named Brando, which measured an impressive 12 feet.

Building a Realistic Tank

To achieve authenticity, the team constructed a physical tank for filming. This included real water, allowing for real interactions between characters, such as Tova touching the water during the scenes.

Underwater Scenes in the Ocean

The film’s underwater segments required actual ocean shooting to maintain depth and realism. The crew traveled to Vancouver Island for these pivotal scenes, capturing the essence of Marcellus’s natural habitat.

Challenges and Unique Conditions

Filming coincided with an algal bloom, which limited visibility underwater. The team had only a brief window to shoot on clear days, using two different locations. Despite challenges, the misty environment added captivating light effects.

Remarkably Bright Creatures showcases the dedication of its filmmakers to create a visually stunning and emotionally rich narrative through its carefully selected filming locations. Viewers are treated not only to a heartwarming story but also to the striking scenery of Vancouver as a stand-in for the fictional Sowell Bay.
