Pioneering Goalie Manon Rhéaume Appointed First GM of PWHL Detroit

Manon Rhéaume, a pioneering figure in women’s hockey, has been appointed the first general manager of the PWHL’s expansion team in Detroit. Rhéaume achieved historic milestones in her career, including becoming the first woman to sign a professional hockey contract and play in an NHL preseason game in 1992 with the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Jayna Hefford, Rhéaume’s former teammate and current executive vice president of hockey operations for the PWHL, praised her as a pioneer. Hefford emphasized Rhéaume’s exceptional hockey credentials, championship mentality, and dedication to advancing women’s hockey.
Leadership Experience
Before joining the PWHL, Rhéaume worked for four seasons in hockey operations with the NHL’s Los Angeles Kings. She also spent 11 years as the girls’ division director at Little Caesars AAA Hockey Club in the Detroit area. This extensive experience equips her for the challenge of constructing a competitive team in a professional league that is relatively new.
Rhéaume expressed her excitement about joining the PWHL, stating, “I’m incredibly honored and excited to join the PWHL and help build something special in Detroit.” She acknowledged the city’s rich hockey heritage and the growing interest in women’s hockey.
PWHL Expansion Plans
The PWHL is expanding, with Detroit being one of three new teams announced. The other two expansion teams are located in Hamilton and Las Vegas, both set to begin play next season.
Rhéaume will lead the effort to build the roster for PWHL Detroit from the ground up. This crucial process will commence following the conclusion of the current playoffs.
