TDSB Cuts 218 Jobs, Impacting Key Services

The Toronto District School Board (TDSB) recently announced significant staff cuts that will impact various programs. A total of 218 central staff positions will be eliminated, including 91 vacant roles. While classroom staff positions will remain intact, several student services are set to change.

TDSB Cuts 218 Jobs: Key Services Impacted

Details released by the TDSB indicate a range of affected programs due to these cuts. The changes aim to address the board’s financial sustainability amid declining enrollment.

Programs Affected by the Cuts

  • Elimination of food services at nine unprofitable school cafeterias.
  • Closure of programming at various outdoor education centers, including one on the Toronto Islands.
  • Streamlining of central library services.
  • Discontinuation of Heritage Month Committees.
  • Downsizing of the equity department.
  • Closure of the Public Engagement Office.
  • Ceasing operations of the TDSB Museum and Archives.

In addition to these program changes, seven senior positions are affected. This includes one associate director, five system superintendents/officers, and one school superintendent.

Context and Reasons for Cuts

The TDSB attributes these necessary cuts to a decline in student enrollment. This year, the board is experiencing a decrease of 3,000 students. Furthermore, projections indicate a drop of 5,000 students for the upcoming school year.

Rohit Gupta, appointed by the Ford government, is overseeing these transitions. He took charge in May 2025 after financial mismanagement issues led to the suspension of elected trustees. Gupta aims to refocus the board’s efforts on educational mandates, directing resources towards improving classroom learning and student outcomes.

Through these cuts, the TDSB is taking steps to restore long-term financial sustainability, while continuing to prioritize the educational experience of its students.
