Max Verstappen Tackles Nurburgring 24 Hours Amid Formula 1 Highlights

Max Verstappen, the reigning four-time Formula 1 world champion, is set to compete in the Nurburgring 24 Hours this weekend. He will be driving a Red Bull-branded Mercedes-AMG GT3 car. This prestigious endurance race will commence at 2 PM on Saturday and can be viewed live on the Sky Sports app.
Verstappen’s Journey to the Nurburgring 24 Hours
This weekend’s race marks another milestone in Verstappen’s quest to excel in various motorsport disciplines outside of Formula 1. Over the past year, he has participated in six races at the Nordschleife, preparing for this iconic event.
Verstappen has always expressed a desire to compete in endurance races, a passion influenced by his father’s history in the sport. “All the big endurance races I want to do,” he said. “I don’t need to be only an F1 driver; I can also do other things.”
The Nurburgring 24 Hours
The Nurburgring 24 Hours is widely regarded as one of the most challenging endurance races globally. It features a 15.769-mile circuit, earning the nickname “The Green Hell.” This year, 161 vehicles across 23 different classes are registered to compete, including top contenders like the Mercedes-AMG GT3, Porsche 911 GT3 R, and Ferrari 296 GT3.
- Race Distance: 15.769 miles
- Number of Cars: 161
- Car Classes: 23
Challenges of the Nurburgring Circuit
Driving at the Nordschleife poses unique challenges, particularly for the faster GT3 class cars as they navigate around slower vehicles. Accidents are common due to the tight nature of the circuit, especially under nighttime conditions.
One critical section for overtaking is the Dottinger Hohe straight, which allows cars to reach over 190 mph. Verstappen previously demonstrated his racing skills by challenging Christopher Haase during an earlier NLS race on this segment of the track.
Verstappen’s Insights into Endurance Racing
In addition to his physical racing commitments, Verstappen engages in sim racing with Team Redline, honing his skills further. He believes these practices keep him prepared and competitive across various racing formats.
Verstappen has already captured victory at the Nurburgring 24 Hours iRacing event in 2024, showcasing his prowess even in digital formats against formidable competitors like Lando Norris.
Future Aspirations Beyond F1
Looking ahead, Verstappen has expressed interest in participating in events such as the Le Mans 24 Hours and the Daytona 24 Hours. With Ford entering the World Endurance Championship in 2027, a collaboration with Red Bull could enhance his chances of competing in prestigious endurance races.
Despite a contract with Red Bull until at least 2028, there are performance clauses that may allow Verstappen to pursue other racing opportunities earlier. As he considers his future, it remains to be seen how his ambitions in endurance racing will impact his Formula 1 career.
