Fireworks Trigger Weapons Probe, Prompting South London School and Road Closures

Authorities in South London have launched a weapons investigation linked to suspected fireworks activity. This investigation prompted a significant police presence at a housing complex on Baseline Road.

Police Response to Reports

On Wednesday morning, officers responded to reports of what sounded like gunshots around 8:10 a.m. in the 100-block of Baseline Road. The police prioritized public safety by implementing immediate measures.

Safety Measures Implemented

  • Roads near the area were temporarily closed.
  • Nearby schools were placed in a “hold and secure” status.

According to police spokesperson Sgt. Sandasha Bough, these actions were taken “out of an abundance of caution.” Following the investigation, one occupant from a nearby residence was taken into custody but later released without charges.

Outcome of the Investigation

No injuries were reported during the incident, and authorities confirmed there is no ongoing risk to public safety. A thorough search of a residence led police to evidence indicating that fireworks were responsible for the initial noise.

Road Reopenings

By the end of the investigation, all affected roads, including Baseline Road between West Street and McGregor Avenue, were reopened. Additionally, the hold and secure status at local schools was lifted.

This incident highlights the importance of community safety and the prompt actions taken by law enforcement in South London.
