Canadiens Shine as Torchbearers in 2026 Playoffs

MONTREAL – The Montreal Canadiens are honoring their history and tradition during the 2026 Playoffs. Each home game features a different Habs alumnus who carries the team’s iconic torch into the Bell Centre. This event occurs as part of the pregame ceremonies, adding excitement to the playoffs.
History of the Canadiens Torch Tradition
The torch tradition began 30 years ago, following a memorable night on March 11, 1996. This was the final game at the Montreal Forum. On that historic evening, every living Canadiens captain passed the torch to Pierre Turgeon. He became the first player to wear the “C” for the Canadiens at their new home.
The torch symbolizes the team’s legacy. It references a line from the renowned poem “In Flanders Fields” by John McCrae: “To you from failing hands we throw the torch / Be yours to hold it high.” These words have been cherished in the Canadiens locker room since 1952 and are now inscribed on the inside collar of Habs jerseys.
