26 Canadian Air Passengers May Have Hantavirus Exposure

Public health authorities in Canada are currently monitoring 26 airline passengers for potential hantavirus exposure. This follows the identification of a confirmed case among fellow travelers. Though seated away from the infected individual, these passengers are being observed under a precautionary protocol.

Hantavirus Exposure Monitoring

Canada’s Chief Public Health Officer, Dr. Joss Reimer, emphasized that the risk to these passengers is considered low. While European health officials have assessed them as having no risk, Canadian authorities are adopting a more cautious stance. “We have deemed them to be minimal or low risk,” she stated.

Public Health Recommendations

Currently, the Public Health Agency of Canada is not mandating isolation for these 26 individuals. However, local public health agencies may recommend self-isolation as they further evaluate the situation.

  • 9 individuals in Ontario, Alberta, and British Columbia classified as high-risk.
  • Three passengers in Ontario are isolating but are not undergoing testing.
  • Four passengers in British Columbia are in a critical incubation phase.
  • Two travelers in Alberta are self-isolating at home.

The high-risk individuals were either aboard the MV Hondius cruise ship or had close contact with someone affected during a flight. Tom McMillan, a spokesperson for the Alberta Primary Health Ministry, noted that to date, no symptoms have been reported among the nine individuals.

Risk Assessment Findings

Dr. Reimer reassured the public, stating that there have been zero signs of hantavirus symptoms in Canada. The overall threat to the general populace remains low. “We have robust processes in place to prevent further spread of the virus,” she added, highlighting the commitment to public health safety.

Authorities maintain that they are vigilant in monitoring the situation as they prioritize the health of Canadians both domestically and internationally.
