Global Snow Report: Key Highlights from Week #314

Winter Arrivals in the Southern Hemisphere

  • Argentina has experienced recent snowfalls that are crucial for the upcoming ski season.
  • Lesotho’s Afriski resort reported fresh snowfall as of May 7, 2026.
  • Australia’s Mt Hotham also reported snowfall coupled with subzero temperatures late last week.

Resort preparations are ramping up in these regions. Snowmaking technologies are being utilized to establish strong early-season bases. Alex Pankiw, a spokesperson from Mt Hotham, expressed optimism about the snowfall, stating, “Snow is falling up here at Hotham… it’s freezing and hopefully a sign of the season to come.”

Japan Maintains Dominance in Snowpack

In stark contrast, Japan’s Gassan continues to offer ski operations, boasting the world’s deepest snowpack, which measures between 240 and 460 cm (96 to 184 inches). The recent sunny weather featured temperatures ranging between 0°C and 10°C, and all ski runs remain open. Gassan is recognized for one of the longest ski seasons globally, extending well into summer.

Snow Conditions and Forecasts

In the southern hemisphere, cold conditions are set to persist, with the potential for further snowfall at higher elevations. Ongoing low temperatures will support snowmaking efforts as resorts prepare for their seasons. The Australasia snow forecast over the next 3-6 days suggests continued favorable conditions for winter sports enthusiasts.

Remaining Ski Areas in the Northern Hemisphere

Meanwhile, as summer approaches in the northern hemisphere, the number of operational ski areas has dwindled. Currently, around two dozen resorts remain open, with North America having the most options. These are primarily concentrated in the East Coast, Midwest, Rockies, and West Coast. European resort options are now majorly confined to Scandinavia and Alpine glaciers.

With the changing seasons, both the northern and southern hemispheres present unique opportunities for skiing, appealing to enthusiasts across the globe. From fresh snow in Argentina to Japan’s impressive snowpack, this week highlights the diverse conditions available for ski lovers.
