Alleged Gang Leader Dave Turmel Evades Extradition, Stays Detained in Italy

Dave Turmel, the alleged leader of the Blood Family Mafia, remains detained in Italy as his extradition to Canada is appealed. His lawyer, Danièle Roy, confirmed that the legal process is ongoing. This situation was first reported by the Journal de Québec and later confirmed by Radio-Canada.

Background on Dave Turmel

In 2024, Turmel was named Canada’s most-wanted fugitive by the Bolo Program. This initiative seeks to inform the public about dangerous criminals. The Blood Family Mafia, a Quebec-based street gang, is notorious for its violent turf wars, which have included severe acts of torture and limb amputations.

Criminal Charges

Turmel faces multiple serious charges in Canada, including:

  • Drug trafficking
  • Conspiracy
  • Assault with a weapon causing bodily harm

He is also suspected of involvement in various other crimes across Quebec.

Extradition Details

Turmel was arrested in Rome in 2025 through a collaboration between Italian authorities and Quebec City police. In March 2026, Italian courts approved his extradition to Canada, nearly a year after his capture.

Legal Proceedings

The timeline for the extradition remains uncertain. Roy indicated that the judicial process in Italy may extend significantly longer than in Canada. “What’s certain is that the process could be very long, and could even take years,” she stated in an interview. The absence of a specific timeline requirement in Italy, unlike Canada’s 30-month limit set by the Jordan decision, may prolong the case.

Current Status

Turmel is currently held at Regina Coeli, Rome’s largest prison. The legal battles regarding his extradition are expected to continue for an indefinite period.
