Family Urges Resumption of Search for Man Presumed Drowned Near Banff

The family of a man presumed drowned in Banff National Park is urging authorities to resume search efforts. The individual, identified as Pavlo Shemchuk, 25, went missing on Friday, May 1, after jumping into the waters of Johnston Canyon. Originally from Ukraine, Shemchuk had been residing in both Pennsylvania and Arizona prior to the incident.

On the day of the incident, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) received a call at approximately 6:40 p.m. A witness reported that Shemchuk had jumped into the rapids but failed to surface.
Search and Recovery Operations
Parks Canada initiated an extensive search in the Johnston Canyon area, which is a well-known tourist destination located about 30 minutes west of Banff. However, on Monday, the agency announced that recovery efforts would be suspended. The decision was made due to hazardous conditions, including frigid water and high water levels resulting from spring runoff.
