North Korea Earns $13 Billion from Military Support to Russia, South Korea Reports

Recent reports indicate that North Korea has generated approximately $13 billion over the past three years through military support to Russia amid its ongoing conflict with Ukraine. This information, sourced from South Korean intelligence and reported by Nikkei Asia, points to a significant financial boost for the North Korean regime.
North Korea’s Economic Gains from Military Aid
If confirmed, the $13 billion figure represents a major economic benefit for North Korea, a country that typically does not disclose its economic statistics. According to United Nations projections, North Korea’s GDP for 2024 is estimated at $17.2 billion, with South Korea’s central bank estimating it at $25.3 billion.
Military Exchanges and Economic Incentives
- In exchange for military assistance, North Korea reportedly receives:
- Hard currency
- Energy supplies
- Military technologies
These exchanges allow Pyongyang to circumvent international sanctions while strengthening its military partnership with Russia. Since the start of the 2022 Ukraine invasion, the two nations have significantly enhanced their military, economic, and cultural cooperation.
Details of Military Shipments
In 2025, North Korea’s military shipments to Russia were valued between $7 billion and $13.8 billion, according to the Institute for National Security Strategy, a research institute based in Seoul. Furthermore, Russia is estimated to have invested over $600 million in North Korean troop deployments since late 2024.
These troop deployments followed a surprise Ukrainian attack in August 2024, prompting increased military collaboration between the two countries.
Human Cost of Support
While North Korea’s military support has provided financial gains, it has come at a steep human cost. As of mid-February, South Korea’s National Intelligence Service reported approximately 6,000 North Korean soldiers had been killed or injured in the ongoing conflict. There are indications that North Korea may be preparing further troop deployments to enhance Russian military efforts.
