Brighton Races Cancelled: Leatherjacket Infestation Continues at Seaside Track

Brighton Racecourse has officially canceled its upcoming meetings scheduled for May 19 and May 26, 2023. This decision stems from ongoing safety concerns related to damage caused by wildlife, specifically due to the presence of leatherjackets. The seaside track had previously disrupted its season opener in April, a mere two hours before the start, because of the adverse conditions affecting the racing surface.

Ground Damage Causes Meeting Cancellations

Issues with the racing surface began when badgers and birds disturbed the turf while foraging for leatherjackets. The April 28 fixture was subsequently moved to Yarmouth, while other races scheduled for April 29 and May 7 were relocated to Bath and Windsor, respectively. Despite the groundstaff’s extensive efforts to mitigate the damage, the condition of the track remains unsafe for racing.

Treatment Efforts and Findings

Ongoing remedial work by the track’s groundstaff included:

  • Scarification
  • Slitting
  • Overseeding
  • Regular watering
  • Application of a plant-based substance

However, a report from the British Horseracing Authority (BHA) identified an infestation of nematodes and leatherjackets as the primary cause of the damage. Further time and treatment are required to ensure the track’s safety for racing.

Future Plans and Considerations

Meetings that were to be held on May 19 and May 26 will now take place at Lingfield and Bath, respectively. A decision regarding the state of the track for a potential meeting on May 29 will be finalized by mid-next week. Clerk of the Course Jack Hastings emphasized the commitment to participant safety, stating, “Our absolute priority is the welfare of our equine and human participants.”

The racecourse has expressed its sincere apologies to all impacted by these cancellations. Ticket holders for the affected events will be contacted regarding refund options or transfers when possible. Brighton Racecourse aims to resume its season on May 29, pending the outcome of ongoing assessments.
