Rescue Teams Continue Search for Missing Snowmobiler in Haines Pass
The search for a missing snowmobiler in Haines Pass continues as rescue teams face challenging conditions. The individual, who became separated from friends, vanished around 4 p.m. on Friday. A storm brought whiteout conditions, making the search efforts increasingly difficult.
Search Operations Underway
According to the B.C. and Yukon RCMP, the missing snowmobiler’s friends returned to the parking area after waiting for hours without seeing him. Authorities reported that he lacked an in-reach device or satellite phone, raising concerns about communication. Furthermore, it is unclear if his Apple satellite messaging was functioning. He was also without essential survival gear.
Challenging Weather Conditions
- Storm conditions: Heavy snow, fog, and strong winds.
- Technical terrain: Presence of open crevices and increased avalanche risk.
Corporal Brett Urano of the B.C. RCMP stated that Yukon RCMP search and rescue teams have been deployed since dawn on Saturday. Attempts to reach the summit by snowmobile were unsuccessful due to extreme weather. Although rescue operations by helicopter occurred during brief periods of visibility, the conditions remained dangerous.
Community Involvement and Warnings
The missing snowmobiler is a member of the Na-Cho Nyäk Dun First Nation. In a social media statement, the First Nation expressed its concern and support for the search efforts. They emphasized hope for the individual’s safety and pledged to keep the community informed.
Community Statement
The First Nation’s statement included the following:
- Support extended to RCMP for search efforts.
- Request for community prayers for the missing individual.
RCMP has issued a warning against unauthorized search efforts by well-meaning individuals. Such actions could complicate the situation further, diverting resources from official rescue operations.
Safety Measures Implemented
To maintain safety, RCMP officers are establishing checkpoints along the Haines Highway. They will be communicating with drivers entering the area to ensure guidance and safety in this ongoing operation.
