Caribbean Cruise Port Imposes Temporary Alcohol Ban

The world’s largest cruise ship, Royal Caribbean’s “Star of the Seas,” made its inaugural arrival at Port Canaveral recently. This event marks a significant milestone for the cruise line and the port.

Temporary Alcohol Ban in the Bahamas

Travelers planning to visit the Bahamas on May 12 will find themselves unable to purchase alcoholic beverages. This dry period coincides with the country’s general election, during which Bahamian law prohibits the sale of “any intoxicating liquor.”

Even cruise line-owned private islands, such as Royal Caribbean’s CocoCay, will adhere to this alcohol ban. Although visitors will not be able to sip cocktails onshore, alcohol will still be served aboard the ships.

CocoCay’s Popularity

Royal Caribbean’s CocoCay, recently refurbished with a $250 million investment, ranks as the top-rated destination among 250 ports visited by the cruise line. The island offers numerous activities, catering to a wide range of interests.

  • Waterpark attractions
  • Beach access
  • Diverse dining options

Despite the onshore ban, guests can still enjoy these amenities during their visit to the island.

Royal Caribbean’s Compliance with Local Laws

Royal Caribbean has emphasized its commitment to comply with all local laws and regulations at every destination. A spokesperson confirmed that the cruise line is fully aware of the Bahamian election laws and will respect the temporary alcohol ban.

Compensations for Guests

Passengers who booked day passes with unlimited drink packages for the Royal Beach Club Paradise Island on May 12 will have options available to them. They can choose between a 50% refund or onboard credit.

Other Cruise Lines in the Bahamas

The Bahamas hosts several cruise lines with their own private islands. Here’s a quick overview:

Norwegian Cruise Line Great Stirrup Cay
Carnival Cruise Line Celebration Key
MSC Cruises Ocean Cay
Disney Cruise Line Castaway Cay / Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point

As of now, MSC Cruises, Norwegian, Disney, and Carnival have not responded to inquiries regarding the temporary alcohol ban.
