Arctic Air Approaches: Weekend Ends with a Cool Down

The UK is bracing for a notable cool down as Arctic air approaches. This unexpected chill comes as many have been caught off guard by forecasts signaling a drop in temperatures for May.
Weather Forecast: Cool Conditions Ahead
A high-pressure system is settling to the west of the UK. This will steer winds from a colder northerly direction. As a result, the latter half of the week will see air masses originating from around the Arctic Circle in northern Scandinavia.
Temperature Expectations
Daytime temperatures across much of the UK are expected to plummet to between 9 and 14 degrees Celsius (48 to 57 degrees Fahrenheit). These readings are significantly below seasonally normal levels.
Precipitation and Snowfall
Low-pressure systems moving southward will enhance the chances of rainfall. Additionally, certain areas, particularly Shetland and the Scottish mountains, may experience some snowfall.
Record Low Temperatures
- May has already seen its coldest conditions in nearly 30 years.
- Tomintoul in Moray, Scotland recorded -6.8 degrees Celsius (20 degrees Fahrenheit) during the night of May 5-6.
- This marked the coldest May temperature since 1997, matching recordings from Leadhills, Lanarkshire.
As we move into the upcoming week, further night frosts are anticipated in various regions. Residents should prepare for a stark contrast from the usual late spring warmth.
