Australian Champions Honor Mother’s Day with Inspiring Athletic Jumps

As Mother’s Day is celebrated, Australian Athletics highlights the inspiring journeys of two remarkable athletes who have successfully returned to competition after motherhood. Brooke Buschkuehl and Vanessa Low exemplify perseverance and dedication, achieving notable accomplishments while balancing their roles as mothers.

Brooke Buschkuehl: A Triumph in Long Jump

Brooke Buschkuehl made headlines just nine months postpartum, winning the Australian Athletics Championships long jump event last month in Sydney. For Buschkuehl, this victory marked her first Mother’s Day as a mother.

“Winning in Sydney was indescribable,” she shared. “Being back to jumping distances after childbirth made it even more special, especially with my partner Nathan and baby Bobby in the crowd.”

Starting her training at the Victorian Institute of Sport seven weeks after giving birth, Buschkuehl sought inspiration from fellow athletes like Gen Gregson and Jess Stenson, who also returned to sports after motherhood. “I was motivated by their successes,” she said. “Having Bobby at competitions gave me perspective on life beyond sports.”

Upcoming Goals

Looking ahead, Buschkuehl is preparing for the Oceania Athletics Championships and the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow later this year. “Reflecting on my journey, I’m proud of how far I’ve come in such a short time,” she stated.

Vanessa Low: Perspective as a Champion

Vanessa Low, a celebrated T63 jumper, also shared her touching experience from the 2024 Paris Paralympics. The presence of her three-year-old son, Matteo, transformed her view of competition. “What mattered most wasn’t the medal but the fact that Matteo was proud of me,” she explained.

Low’s journey to success is remarkable. Just two years before her gold medal performance, she contemplated ending her athletic career. However, her determination to return led to a bronze medal win at the World Para Athletics Championships in Paris in 2023.

Motherhood and Competitive Spirit

On this Mother’s Day, Low emphasizes the importance of being a role model for Matteo. “I celebrate my dedication in training because that’s what he will remember,” she noted. “Showing up as the best version of myself is my priority.”

Inspiring Athletic Jumps

Both athletes reflect the remarkable journey of Australian mothers in sports. Their ability to balance family and competition exemplifies the spirit of resilience and inspiration. As they continue to compete, their stories serve as motivation for many aspiring athletes.
