Plane Strikes, Kills Pedestrian During Takeoff at Denver Airport

A Frontier Airlines flight tragically struck and killed a pedestrian during takeoff at Denver International Airport (DEN). This incident occurred around 11:19 p.m. on a Friday night, prompting immediate emergency responses.

Details of the Incident

The aircraft was preparing for its journey from Denver to Los Angeles International Airport when the collision happened. The pedestrian, who is not believed to be an airport employee, reportedly jumped a perimeter fence before entering the runway area. Within two minutes of accessing the runway, the individual was fatally struck by the Airbus A321.

Emergency Response

  • The pilot communicated to the control tower about hitting someone and noted an engine fire.
  • Emergency services were immediately deployed to the scene.
  • The flight, now identified as Flight 4345, had 224 passengers and seven crew members on board.

As a result of the incident, passengers had to evacuate the aircraft via emergency slides. They were then transported to the airport terminal by bus. Reports indicate that 12 passengers sustained minor injuries, with five being taken to local hospitals for further evaluation.

Investigation Underway

Authorities have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding this tragic event. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has been notified, and runway 17L remains closed as officials assess the situation.

Official Statements

U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy labeled the pedestrian a “trespasser” for scaling the airport’s security perimeter. Local law enforcement is conducting a thorough investigation, with assistance from the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the Transportation Security Administration (TSA).

This incident stands as a stark reminder of the importance of airport security protocols. Just a day earlier, a related tragedy occurred at Orlando International Airport, where a Delta Air Lines employee lost their life while on duty.

As investigations continue, both Denver International Airport and Frontier Airlines express their condolences and commitment to safety.
