Iconic Landmark Bettison’s Folly Purchased for Just £1

Bettison’s Folly, a historic tower in Hornsea, is set for revitalization. The stunning 55-foot structure, partially concealed by trees on Willows Drive, will welcome visitors later this year. Although it rarely opens its doors, it will be accessible for free during Heritage Open Days in September across East Yorkshire.

Bettison’s Folly: A Unique Landmark

Constructed in 1844 by William Bettison, a notable newspaper owner and brewer from Hull, this Victorian tower is one of Hornsea’s tallest buildings. It originally stood in his garden at Newbegin House, which is no longer there, yet remnants of its wall and buttress remain.

Ownership and Acquisition

  • The current owners acquired the tower for just £1.
  • Dave Foster purchased it about ten years ago after a Civic Society meeting.
  • His friend Mick Bateman joined as co-owner for a mere 50p.

After legal fees, the total investment in the tower amounted to approximately £1,500. Despite its costs, Foster and Bateman view their ownership as a commitment to preserving local history.

Historic Significance and Community Events

Throughout its history, Bettison’s Folly has served multiple purposes. During World War II, it operated as a lookout post and siren. In recent years, it has hosted community activities, including school visits and local events.

Visitors can reportedly see up to 20 miles out to sea from the top of the tower. Its unique architectural features include walls made from “treacle bricks” and diamond patterns formed by beer bottle bases, highlighting its brewer owner’s background.

Future Plans and Community Support

Planned maintenance will address the tower’s deteriorating windows and a winch-operated flagpole, which is considered unique in the country. Various local groups, including Hornsea Lions and the Hornsea Civic Society, have pledged support for the maintenance project.

Mick Bateman expressed the importance of the tower, stating, “We want to keep it up for Hornsea. This isn’t just an investment for us but for the community.”

An Invitation to Discover

Despite its central location, Bettison’s Folly remains a hidden gem for many residents. Comments from locals reveal that awareness of its existence is low.

As the Heritage Open Day approaches, the owners are eager to extend access, allowing both residents and visitors to explore this intriguing landmark. A recent visit by tourists revealed the unique charm and hidden beauty of the folly, igniting further interest in this historical site.
