Diamondbacks Catcher Chooses Free Agency

Arizona Diamondbacks catcher Jose Herrera has made a significant decision regarding his career. He has officially chosen to enter free agency after a long tenure with the organization. This marks the first time since 2013 that Herrera will not be affiliated with the Diamondbacks.

Herrera joined the Diamondbacks as an international signing at just 16 years old. Over the years, he worked his way through the minor leagues, eventually spending parts of four seasons in the Major Leagues with Arizona. This 29-year-old switch-hitter has struggled offensively, posting a slash line of .187/.285/.259 during the 2025 season. He hit a career-high of two home runs, with his first major league home run coming in the 2024 season.

Roster Changes Affecting Herrera

With the return of starting catcher Gabriel Moreno, the Diamondbacks faced a tough choice. Veteran backup catcher James McCann had become a valuable asset in the clubhouse and on the field. This situation led to Herrera being designated for assignment (DFA).

  • Herrera cleared waivers and returned to Triple-A Reno.
  • In 11 games there, he hit .278/.381/.417.

Manager Torey Lovullo praised Herrera’s determination and leadership qualities at the time of his DFA. He described him as a great example of toughness and engagement, qualities that embody what it means to be an Arizona Diamondback.

Impact of Veteran Players

Moreno’s health and McCann’s leadership significantly improved the Diamondbacks’ dynamics. Retaining both players was a calculated decision that paid off. While there’s a possibility Herrera could return to the organization, his free agency move may lead him to don another team’s uniform, which would be unusual for a long-time D-back.

Jake Woodford’s Release

In addition to Herrera, right-handed reliever Jake Woodford has also opted for free agency. Woodford joined the Diamondbacks mid-season and found some success in a length-focused role. However, his performance took a downturn, culminating in allowing 10 runs (nine earned) over his final 3.1 innings pitched, resulting in a 6.44 ERA.

  • Woodford was designated for assignment on September 21.
  • He also cleared waivers and was sent to Triple-A Reno but did not make an appearance.

Testing the free agency market may lead Woodford to explore new opportunities, with a return to the Diamondbacks appearing unlikely at this stage.
