Alphonso Davies Faces 4-5 Week Injury, World Cup Participation Uncertain

Alphonso Davies, the Canadian wing-back, has suffered a hamstring injury, which will sideline him for four to five weeks. Bayern Munich confirmed this setback following their Champions League semifinal match against Paris Saint-Germain. The injury occurred late in the game, specifically in the 86th minute, as Bayern drew 1-1, resulting in their elimination from the tournament.

World Cup Participation in Jeopardy

Davies’ injury raises concerns about his availability for the upcoming FIFA World Cup. Canada is set to begin their campaign against Bosnia and Herzegovina on June 12. The Canadian men’s national team is in close contact with both Davies and Bayern Munich’s medical staff to monitor his recovery progress.

Support for Recovery

The national team expressed their commitment to supporting Davies through this challenging time. They are providing access to specialized soft tissue expertise to assist in his path back to full fitness ahead of the World Cup.

Injury History

This latest injury marks the third setback for Davies since December 8, when he returned from a significant 260-day recovery period due to a torn cruciate ligament in his right knee. His injury history includes:

  • Injury from Dec. 8, 2022, due to a torn cruciate ligament.
  • Muscle fiber tear: February 22 – March 9, 2023.
  • Right hamstring injury: March 11 – April 2, 2023.

Due to these injuries, Davies has participated in only 23 matches with Bayern this season, achieving one goal and five assists. Furthermore, he has not played for the Canadian national team since his appearance against the United States in March.

The uncertainty surrounding Davies’ recovery and availability is impacting Canada’s World Cup preparations as they aim to advance in the tournament.
