Google Health Replaces Fitbit App; Introduces New Premium AI Plan

Google has officially launched the Google Health app, marking the end of the Fitbit app after extensive public testing. This new platform aims to merge the innovative spirit of Fitbit with Google’s tech capabilities. While Fitbit will continue to be used for hardware, all software functions will now be consolidated under the Google Health brand.

Overview of Google Health Features

The introduction of Google Health brings several noteworthy features to users. The app is organized into four main tabs:

  • Today: A customizable metrics dashboard, along with a feed of coaching messages for Premium subscribers.
  • Fitness: Tracking of activities, various metrics, and a weekly training plan.
  • Sleep: Comprehensive data along with an updated sleep score.
  • Health: Access to multiple health metrics and medical records.

One of the most exciting updates is the introduction of new customizable metrics for the dashboard. A “Log” button allows users to enter Activity, Body Fat, Food, Glucose, Hydration, Period, Sleep, Temperature, and Weight. In addition, friend leaderboards are reintroduced, enabling users to track their cardio load and steps.

Subscription Tiers: Free vs. Premium

Google Health offers both free and Premium subscription options. Free users can access basic health, activity, and sleep tracking features, along with a simple medical record import for users in the United States. Google Health Premium, which was formerly known as Fitbit Premium, comes with added benefits:

  • Access to the Google Health Coach, delivering personalized fitness plans and daily workout recommendations.
  • Detailed insights into sleep, fitness, and health metrics.
  • Multimodal logging capabilities, allowing users to log activities through text, voice, or photos.

This Premium service is available as part of Google AI Pro or AI Ultra in over 30 countries, with subscription options priced at $9.99 per month or $99.99 annually.

Advanced AI Integration

The Google Health Coach, integrated with advanced AI technology, adapts to users’ metrics and requests in real time. Users can engage with the Coach to inquire about previous runs, recognize symptoms related to health, and seek tailored workout advice.

Privacy and Accessibility

Privacy remains a priority for Google, which assures users that Fitbit health data will not be used for advertising purposes. The Google Health app is now accessible in over 200 countries.

This update, which also includes enhancements to the Pixel Watch, began rolling out on May 19, with full availability expected before the Fitbit Air launches on May 26. Later this year, Google Fit users will have the option to transfer their data to the Google Health app.
