AMG’s Michael Scheibe: “We’re Redoubling Our Engine Efforts”

The landscape of luxury performance vehicles is evolving at Mercedes-AMG. Michael Scheibe, the head of AMG, has announced a strategic pivot back to internal combustion engines, specifically marking the return of the V8 engine.
AMG’s Engine Strategy: A Return to Power
According to Scheibe, AMG is “doubling down” on its commitment to combustion engines. This includes reintroducing the iconic V8 engine by the end of this year with several models, such as SUVs and possibly the much-anticipated ‘Mythos’ special edition based on the CLE coupe.
The V8 Engine’s Comeback
- The V8 will be featured in high-end AMG models.
- Expected to be a performance variant of the M177 Evo engine.
- Targeted for limited-edition collector vehicles, conserving its exclusivity.
Declining Presence of Four-Cylinder PHEVs
AMG’s shift also involves phasing out the unpopular four-cylinder plug-in hybrid (PHEV) system designated the ‘P3 hybrid.’ This system, used in the AMG C63, will be replaced by a new six-cylinder engine, which is better received and already integrated into the updated AMG GLC 53.
Future of PHEVs
While PHEVs will not completely vanish from the lineup, their numbers will be reduced. Scheibe indicated that existing PHEVs like the GLE 53 and E53 will continue as they meet specific market demands, particularly in areas with emission restrictions.
The Road Ahead for Electric AMG Models
Despite this return to combustion engines, AMG is committed to expanding its electric offerings. The brand plans to unveil the next-generation GT four-door, showcasing advanced axial flux electric motors developed by YASA. This model promises to deliver an exhilarating driving experience, blending performance and the quiet efficiency of electric power.
Upcoming Electric Models
- Next GT four-door is set to be revealed soon.
- Confirmed electric AMG SUV in development.
- Potential electric versions of CLA, C-Class, and GLC models are under consideration.
Catering to Diverse Market Demands
AMG’s dual approach of enhancing combustion engines while promoting electric vehicles reflects evolving customer preferences. Scheibe emphasizes the importance of offering choices based on regional demands. In the U.S., for instance, a strong community remains loyal to gasoline-powered cars, prompting AMG to provide both combustion and electric options.
This strategy allows customers to select the technology that best suits their driving needs, reaffirming AMG’s dedication to performance and innovation. As the luxury vehicle market continues to transform, AMG aims to lead with a balanced portfolio of robust engines and cutting-edge electric powertrains.
