Mercedes-AMG to Restore V8 Engines This Year

Mercedes-AMG is set to revitalize its V8 engine lineup by the end of 2026. This announcement comes from AMG CEO Michael Scheibe, who confirmed the return of V8 engines across various models, starting with SUVs.
Upcoming V8 Engines from Mercedes-AMG
In an interview with Car Magazine, Scheibe stated, “At the end of the year, you’ll see the V8 coming back to AMG.” The performance brand aims to double down on internal combustion engine vehicles while also emphasizing their electric vehicle (EV) range. This strategy is part of AMG’s commitment to deliver “more AMG than ever before.”
Transition from Hybrid to V8
The shift towards V8 engines comes after the controversial introduction of the four-cylinder C63 AMG. This model replaced the 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8, leading to a mixed reaction from enthusiasts who felt the car lost its essence.
- The previous C63 S E Performance featured a hybrid setup with a lightweight inline-four engine.
- Mercedes-AMG plans to phase out this hybrid powertrain in favor of a more traditional setup.
To enhance performance, the V8 is expected to be derived from the M177 Evo engine, which is featured in the new S-Class. Scheibe indicated that we should expect this engine first in the GLE and GLS SUVs, with coupes and sedans to follow.
Future Plans for Mercedes-AMG
Adam Chamberlain, the CEO of Mercedes’ U.S. operations, has hinted at a potential V8-powered CLE model, indicating further expansion of the V8 range. Nonetheless, plug-in hybrid models such as the GLE53 and E53 will remain available, particularly in markets with strict emissions regulations.
In addition to V8 models, Mercedes-AMG is planning to release an all-electric AMG GT four-door vehicle. This will showcase the brand’s design prowess while catering to the growing demand for electric performance cars.
For automotive enthusiasts, the return of the V8 signals a renewed focus on performance and traditional power. Mercedes-AMG’s strategy aims to provide a diverse lineup that appeals to a variety of preferences.
