Will Matthews Acquire Chayka’s Project?

John Chayka has recently assumed the role of General Manager for the Toronto Maple Leafs. One of his first major challenges relates to star player Auston Matthews. Although Matthews remains under contract for two more seasons, uncertainty looms about his return for the upcoming season, according to reports from the league.
Will Matthews Acquire Chayka’s Project?
In comments reported by Chris Johnston, Chayka indicated he plans to have discussions with Matthews. He emphasized that the player deserves clarity regarding the team’s direction. Chayka’s statement during his press conference highlighted that he does not intend to pressure Matthews into making any quick decisions.
Matthews’ Current Status
Auston Matthews is currently 28 years old and earns an annual salary of $13.25 million. This past season, he played 60 games, missing the final stretch due to a knee injury sustained from a hit by Radko Gudas. In terms of performance, Matthews ended the regular season with:
- 27 goals
- 26 assists
Challenges Ahead for the Maple Leafs
The coming months are critical for Chayka and the Maple Leafs management, especially following a disappointing season. Toronto finished with only 78 points, ahead of only the New York Rangers in the Eastern Conference. This marks a challenging transition year after the departure of Mitch Marner.
As part of their rebuilding efforts, the Maple Leafs are looking ahead to the upcoming draft lottery. Toronto currently holds the fifth-best odds to secure the first overall pick. However, the complexities of previous trades with the Boston Bruins and Philadelphia Flyers could complicate their situation if the lottery does not yield favorable results.
