PWHL Expands with 9th Team in Detroit for Upcoming Season

The Premier Women’s Hockey League (PWHL) has announced significant expansion plans, introducing a ninth team in Detroit for the upcoming season. This marks the league’s third expansion since its inception in 2024, reflecting PWHL’s commitment to growth and development in the U.S. market.
Detroit: A New Home for PWHL
Detroit has a rich hockey heritage, producing notable players like Megan Keller and Abby Roque. The PWHL has previously hosted four games in the city, drawing impressive crowds, including a high of 15,938 spectators during a match between the Montréal Victoire and New York Sirens.
Jayna Hefford, the PWHL’s executive vice president of hockey operations, emphasized the city’s enthusiastic fanbase. “In the first year, there were signs that said they want a team. In the second and third year, there were signs that said they deserved a team,” Hefford stated. “I think they’re absolutely right.”
Team Ownership and Operations
The expansion bid was spearheaded by Ilitch Sports + Entertainment, which owns iconic franchises like the NHL’s Detroit Red Wings. The new PWHL team will play at Little Caesars Arena and practice at the BELFOR Training Center located within the same facility.
While the Ilitch family led the bid, the team will fall under The Walter Group’s ownership, which manages all nine PWHL teams as part of a unified organization. The team’s color scheme will feature black, silver, white, and a hint of red, capturing the city’s industrial spirit.
Community Impact and Future Development
Chris Ilitch, president and CEO of the Ilitch Companies, expressed excitement about the team’s arrival in Detroit. “This moment also reflects our broader vision of using sports as a catalyst for Detroit’s continued revitalization,” he noted. The PWHL aims to enhance community engagement, support economic growth, and boost the long-term development of the city.
Facilities and Logistics
Facilities play a crucial role in market selection. The PWHL seeks locations that ensure teams have adequate player and staff space. Detroit’s proximity allows for easier travel between midwestern teams, essential for league operations.
Expansion Plans and Upcoming Draft Events
The addition of the Detroit team is part of a broader strategy to expand the league, with up to four new markets expected before the next season. The PWHL recently added teams in Vancouver and Seattle, which saw solid support despite not making the playoffs in their inaugural year.
The league has scheduled the PWHL Awards for June 16 and the PWHL Draft for June 17 in Detroit. The Vancouver Goldeneyes will have the first overall pick after securing the league’s Gold Plan race, which highlights the growth of the league.
Building a Competitive Roster
The PWHL has yet to outline the roster-building process for the Detroit franchise. Currently, there are no plans for an expansion draft, diverging from practices in previous seasons during which Vancouver and Seattle were added. Instead, a phased process will allow existing teams to protect certain players, while expansion teams can sign unprotected players later.
This strategic expansion reinforces the PWHL’s commitment to enhancing competitive balance and player experience, paving the way for a successful future in women’s hockey.
