Dunlop Suspends Ducati Racing at NW200, TT Plans Uncertain

Michael Dunlop, the Isle of Man TT’s most accomplished racer, has announced the withdrawal of his Ducati motorcycles from the North West 200 races this week. This decision comes shortly after he revealed a partnership with Ducati for the superbike and superstock categories. Dunlop is considering alternative motorcycle options for the upcoming TT, which adds uncertainty to his future plans.
Ducati Partnership and Its Challenges
Dunlop’s switch from BMW to Ducati for the 2023 racing season was anticipated due to his previous successes. Notably, he secured Ducati’s first supersport victories in two decades last year. This year also marks a significant milestone for Ducati as it celebrates its 100th anniversary.
The Withdrawal Reasons
Despite the partnership, Dunlop stated he doesn’t feel prepared to race the Ducati V4 Panigale, as his team received the motorcycle too close to the event. In a statement, he mentioned, “With this new full WSBK Ducati V4R version having just arrived to the team at very late notice, we feel it is appropriate for the team to continue testing.”
Future Plans and Testing
The decision to withdraw is not unexpected, given recent reports from the British Superbike test held at Oulton Park. Dunlop has a history of changing his motorcycle choices to ensure competitiveness. If his Ducati withdrawal extends to the TT, it would be the third time Dunlop has opted out of racing Ducati at this event.
Potential Alternatives
While it remains uncertain what bike he will ultimately use, Dunlop has several options. He has a longstanding relationship with the British Superbike team Hawk Racing, which has Honda motorcycles available at the North West 200. Additionally, he hinted at possibly using a BMW superstock bike, which he raced earlier this year at the Cookstown 100 road race.
