Private School Head Dismissed Over Controversial Farewell Speech

Former headmaster Tony George of the King’s School was dismissed following a controversial farewell speech that raised significant concerns regarding his conduct. His remarks during the speech and actions in relation to a student sparked an investigation that ultimately led to his termination.
Details of the Farewell Speech Incident
On June 24, 2022, during a farewell speech for school sergeant Aaran Booth, George reportedly made comments about disciplinary actions that were deemed inappropriate. He stated, “I’ll kick your arse until your nose bleeds,” in reference to a disciplinary scenario, which was perceived as inappropriate, especially considering the context of dealing with students, including one with autism.
Investigation Findings
Following George’s remarks, two investigations were launched. The first investigation revealed that he had struck a student on the head with his hand on June 25. Although the incident was classified as an assault, it was deemed trivial and negligible, falling short of reportable conduct.
The second investigation focused on George’s farewell speech. It concluded that his comments constituted a breach of the King’s School’s code of conduct. This assessment led to George taking a leave of absence from the school.
Termination Process
- George received letters from the school council on August 15, 2022.
- He was formally suspended in September after indicating his desire to return.
- A termination notice was eventually issued on December 22, 2022.
During this period, George attempted to seek mediation concerning the disputes, but the school’s council declined these requests. The Archbishop of Sydney, Reverend Kanishka Raffel, expressed support for mediation along with other council members.
Consequences of Dismissal
George’s legal team argued that the dismissal would result in severe economic loss and reputational damage. They sought an injunction to halt the termination until his contract expired in December 2026. Additionally, he was required to vacate the school’s headmaster residence by January 25, 2023.
Related Issues at the School
The incident involving George was part of broader issues at the King’s School, including:
- A government investigation halted a planned plunge pool construction at the headmaster’s residence.
- Improper use of school funds regarding business-class flights taken by George’s wife was also highlighted.
These occurrences have raised questions about financial practices and governance at the school, prompting further scrutiny and review of its operational and ethical standards.
