Dahlin, Landeskog, Toews Named Finalists for Masterton Trophy

Rasmus Dahlin, Gabriel Landeskog, and Jonathan Toews have been named finalists for the prestigious 2025-26 Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy. This award recognizes the NHL player who exemplifies perseverance, sportsmanship, and dedication to hockey.

Finalists Overview

The selection of the finalists was made public by the National Hockey League. The Professional Hockey Writers Association (PHWA) local chapters submitted nominations following the conclusion of the regular season. Here are the finalists in alphabetical order:

  • Rasmus Dahlin – Buffalo Sabres
  • Gabriel Landeskog – Colorado Avalanche
  • Jonathan Toews – Winnipeg Jets

Rasmus Dahlin – Buffalo Sabres

Dahlin’s season was notably emotional. During a vacation in France, his fiancée Carolina Matovac suffered heart failure and required a heart transplant. This incident resulted in a leave of absence for Dahlin to support her through medical care in Sweden.

Despite these challenges, Dahlin continued to perform outstandingly on the ice. His teammate, Tage Thompson, commended his leadership and mental toughness during this trying period.

Gabriel Landeskog – Colorado Avalanche

Landeskog faced significant health challenges over the past few years, missing three full seasons due to knee issues. After undergoing multiple surgeries, including knee cartilage replacement in May 2023, he made history by returning to the NHL and contributing greatly during the 2025 playoffs.

Even after sustaining broken ribs in January, Landeskog demonstrated resilience. The Avalanche’s performance reflected his impact, with a record of 45 wins when he played compared to only 10 wins in his absence.

Jonathan Toews – Winnipeg Jets

Toews made a remarkable comeback to the NHL this season after a two-and-a-half-year hiatus due to various health problems, including long Covid. His journey to recovery included Ayurvedic treatment in India.

The veteran forward signed with the Jets and excelled, winning 62.1% of faceoffs, ranking him among the league leaders. He also celebrated reaching double-digit goals for the 16th consecutive NHL season.

Reflecting on his journey, Toews expressed gratitude for the challenges he has faced, stating they taught him valuable lessons about life and hockey.

A Scholarship Fund for Perseverance

In addition to the trophy, a $2,500 grant is awarded annually from the PHWA to the Bill Masterton Scholarship Fund in honor of the winner. This fund supports the vision of promoting perseverance in the sport.

Legacy of the Masterton Trophy

The Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy, established in 1968, memorializes Bill Masterton, a player known for his dedication and sportsmanship who died tragically on January 15, 1968.

Upcoming Announcements

The NHL will continue to unveil trophy finalists, with the Calder Memorial Trophy finalists expected to be announced on May 5.
