US Targets Iranian Boats After Iran Attacks UAE Oil Facility

The recent escalation of tensions in the Gulf region has raised significant concerns following the attack on an oil facility in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). A tanker affiliated with Adnoc, the UAE’s state-owned oil company, was struck in the Strait of Hormuz. South Korea also reported an explosion involving one of its ships near the UAE.

UAE Responds to Attacks

UAE authorities reported engaging twelve ballistic missiles, three cruise missiles, and four drones during the attacks. One notable strike led to a large fire at the port of Fujairah, causing injuries to three individuals, all of whom were Indian nationals. India’s foreign ministry condemned the attack as “unacceptable.”

Abu Dhabi characterized these assaults as a “dangerous escalation” and emphasized its right to respond. In contrast, Iranian state media claimed that Iran had “no plans to target the UAE.”

International Reactions

Global leaders have reacted strongly to the attacks on UAE infrastructure. French President Emmanuel Macron described the strikes as “unjustified and unacceptable.” Similarly, British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer reaffirmed the UK’s commitment to defending Gulf partners, while German Chancellor Friedrich Merz urged for an end to the blockade of the strait, calling on Tehran to engage in negotiations.

  • French President: Emmanuel Macron – “unjustified and unacceptable” strikes
  • UK Prime Minister: Sir Keir Starmer – Continued support for Gulf defense
  • German Chancellor: Friedrich Merz – End blockade, negotiate with Tehran

Saudi Arabia’s foreign ministry also issued a statement, requesting that Iran adhere to “the principles of good neighborliness.”

Impact on Oil Prices

Following the attacks, the benchmark Brent crude oil price surged past $115 a barrel, marking an increase of over 5% within the day. Fujairah, strategically located on the UAE’s eastern coast, serves as a crucial point for oil exports through a pipeline that bypasses the heavily monitored Strait of Hormuz.

Continued Tensions in the Region

In a separate incident, a residential building in Bukha, Oman, was hit, resulting in injuries to two people. This ongoing violence highlights the unstable situation surrounding the Strait of Hormuz, which is vital for global oil transportation.

In light of these developments, U.S. President Donald Trump announced a new initiative, termed “Project Freedom,” aimed at assisting stranded vessels in the area. An estimated 20,000 seafarers on 2,000 ships have been affected since hostilities between the U.S. and Iran escalated in February.

Trump noted that the U.S. has been approached by numerous countries for assistance in liberating vessels trapped in the strait, referring to the ships as “neutral and innocent bystanders.” He did, however, caution that the U.S. would consider using force if the humanitarian process were obstructed.
